The Functions of Barrel
Transporting the material
The barrels responsible for transporting the plastic material from the hopper zone to the extrusion zone. The screw inside the barrel pushes the material through the machine, providing the movement required for the transformation.
Compression and heating
During its route through the barrel, the plastic material is compressed and heated. The compression is essential to increase the pressure and guarantee that the material is distributed uniformly throughout the length of the screw.
Melting the material
Thanks to the rotating action of the screw and the generation of heat, the material changes from a solid state to a molten state, ready to be extruded through the extruder head.
Precise dosage
The barrel makes it possible to dose the plastic material precisely. The geometry of the screw and barrel is designed to guarantee that an accurate quantity of material is pushed through the machine, helping obtain consistent and high-quality finished products.
Controlling pressure and temperature
It regulates the pressure and temperature inside the extruder. This control is essential when it comes to adapting the machine to the specific requirements of the plastic material being processed, guaranteeing safe and efficient extrusion.
Solid Barrel (Closed Barrel Section)
This is the most standard type used in feeding and conveying zones. It provides strength and stability, maintaining constant pressure while preventing material leakage. It is usually nitrided or bimetallic for wear and corrosion resistance.
Vented Barrel (Degassing Barrel)
A vented barrel features one or more openings that allow trapped gases, moisture, or volatiles to escape during processing. It is especially useful in compounding and recycling applications where materials may contain moisture or air bubbles.
Feeding Barrel (Grooved or Smooth Feed Zone)
This barrel type helps ensure consistent material feeding. A grooved feeding barrel provides higher friction, increasing throughput for materials like HDPE or PP, while smooth barrels are better for sensitive or sticky materials.
Side Feeder Barrel
When additional fillers, pigments, or additives are introduced into the process, a side feeder barrel allows precise control of feeding without disrupting the main material flow. It enhances flexibility in compounding formulations.
Liquid Injection Barrel
For formulations requiring liquid additives or plasticizers, this barrel type includes injection ports and cooling zones to ensure uniform distribution.
Barrel Material Types
Carbon Steel
Carbon steel is one of the most commonly used materials for plastic extruder barrels, especially in the early days of plastic extrusion. It is an alloy of iron and carbon, with carbon content typically ranging from 0.05% to 2.1%. The main advantage of carbon steel is its relatively low cost, which makes it an economical choice for many plastic extrusion operations.
Alloy Steel
Alloy steel is an enhanced version of carbon steel, with the addition of other elements such as chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and vanadium. These alloying elements improve the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the steel.
Bimetallic Materials
Bimetallic barrels are a combination of two different materials, typically a base material and a lining material. The base material is usually a high - strength steel, which provides the structural integrity of the barrel. The lining material is a wear - resistant and corrosion - resistant alloy, which is bonded to the inner surface of the base material.
Nitrided Steel
Nitriding is a surface treatment process that involves diffusing nitrogen into the surface of the steel to form a hard and wear - resistant nitride layer. Nitrided steel barrels have a high - hardness surface layer, which provides excellent wear resistance.
